GEORGE’S WORKSHOP:
Application of Arabic Rhythms with Live Musicians & Dancers
Sunday, April 15 – 4:00, Center House 4th Floor, Rm. E
Taking you beyond basic rhythms and techniques, and into real world application when working with other live musicians, George will share more than 30 years of experience as a percussionist with groups from all over the world. As an Egyptian, he will also enable you to experience the emotion, nuances, and subtle phrasing of Arabic rhythms and music. In the final 10 minutes of this workshop, you will play along with George and actual members of MB Orchestra — Bahaa Sadak (keyboards) and Maurice Sadak (oud), plus guest percussionist Keith Holt, and live dancers from Suzanna’s workshop. Don’t miss this unparalleled opportunity!
SUZANNA’S WORKSHOP:
“Walk Like An Egyptian”
Sunday, April 15 – 4:00, Center House 4th Floor, Rm. H
Belly dance is an increasingly widespread and reinvented movement art form. Egyptians still consider it as natural for the body to execute as walking. Let your body explore the subtle weight shifts, alignment, and shapes that go from basic to mastery. Learn to recognize standard rhythms common in popular, classical, and folkloric Egyptian music – Beledi, Saidi, Maqsoum, Leff (Malfouf), and Fellahi – and physically express them through a toolkit of basic movements taught in this workshop. Suzanna will guide you on a journey through recorded Egyptian music. Then the class will join George Sadak’s doumbec workshop and dance with a full live Egyptian band that includes guest percussionist Keith Holt, and MB Orchestra’s Maurice Sadak (oud) and Bahaa Sadak (keyboards)! Rather than learning a string of choreography, this class is geared toward sensing mood, pace, and emotion to discover the natural dancer that lives within you. Women and men of all ages and levels welcome.
