GEORGE’S WORKSHOP:
Application of Arabic Rhythms with Live Musicians & Dancers
Sunday, April 15 – 4:00, Center House 4th Floor, Rm. E

Taking you beyond basic rhythms and techniques, and into real world application when working with other live musicians, George will share more than 30 years of experience as a percussionist with groups from all over the world. As an Egyptian, he will also enable you to experience the emotion, nuances, and subtle phrasing of Arabic rhythms and music. In the final 10 minutes of this workshop, you will play along with George and actual members of MB Orchestra — Bahaa Sadak (keyboards) and Maurice Sadak (oud), plus guest percussionist Keith Holt, and live dancers from Suzanna’s workshop. Don’t miss this unparalleled opportunity!

SUZANNA’S WORKSHOP:
“Walk Like An Egyptian”
Sunday, April 15 – 4:00, Center House 4th Floor, Rm. H

Belly dance is an increasingly widespread and reinvented movement art form. Egyptians still consider it as natural for the body to execute as walking. Let your body explore the subtle weight shifts, alignment, and shapes that go from basic to mastery. Learn to recognize standard rhythms common in popular, classical, and folkloric Egyptian music – Beledi, Saidi, Maqsoum, Leff (Malfouf), and Fellahi – and physically express them through a toolkit of basic movements taught in this workshop. Suzanna will guide you on a journey through recorded Egyptian music. Then the class will join George Sadak’s doumbec workshop and dance with a full live Egyptian band that includes guest percussionist Keith Holt, and MB Orchestra’s Maurice Sadak (oud) and Bahaa Sadak (keyboards)! Rather than learning a string of choreography, this class is geared toward sensing mood, pace, and emotion to discover the natural dancer that lives within you. Women and men of all ages and levels welcome.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

George Sadak, a native Egyptian, has been a drummer, percussionist and a recording artist with MB Orchestra for several decades. He has studied and performed a range of styles, from southern Europe and the eastern Arabic gulf to Rai music of North Africa, and spent 9 years in LA touring and co-producing with international stars such as Ihab Tawfik, Assi El Helani, Wael Kafoury, Issam Houshan, Gamal Gomaa.

Keith has studied with many masters of the art and has been teaming up with George for a year.

Dance has been at the core of Suzanna’s existence for a lifetime. With a focus on Egyptian Orientale and training in numerous folkloric influences, she has studied Middle Eastern dance for more than a decade with many of today’s most prominent international instructors, building on an extensive background in jazz, West African, modern, and ballet, and 12 years of experience in the theatre. She offers classes, private coaching, and workshops, and performs weekly as an Egyptian Cabaret soloist at Seattle’s premiere venues as well as with cultural celebrations, arranged tours, and private functions.

Punk Rock Yoga & Tribal Bellydance April 27th 6:30pm @ Home Alive

Thursday, April 12th, 2007

http://punkrockyoga.com/seattle/news.php
Punk Rock Yoga and Belly Dance - Special one-time class April 27, 6:30 pm

We are thrilled to present a fun experimental class for our students. Belly dance is a great way to gain flexibility in the hips, stretch and strengthen the lower back and develop greater body alignment awareness. It’s also one the best ways to learn how to engage core muscles. This class is a great mix of core-focused yoga and a basic introduction to tribal style belly dance. We also have a special treat with some fun alternative music. All are welcome to come - especially beginners.

American Tribal Style Bellydance (ATS) is elegant and graceful, celebrating the strength and beauty of the body, regardless of age and size. Tribal Style is largely improvisational, using simple steps and gestures in a repetitive fashion, building on the music and the interaction between the dancers. Dancers working together in cooperation; a group focused on presenting a dance as one entity.

Zu Leika, Yoga Instructor: When Zu isn’t traveling to Mexico or practicing with one of her three bands, she’s teaching Viniyoga Yoga. Breath and movement are linked together as a way to move the body and quiet the mind. In Viniyoga, students are taught that the breath should actually lead the body into and out of each posture. Viniyoga is less concerned with arduous precise exercises than with developing a balanced and appropriate practice for each student.

Katrina, Belly Dance Instructor: Katrina has studied American Tribal Belly Dance since 1999. She started in Chicago with Taj, and Stephanie Barto of Read My Hips. After moving back to Seattle she danced with Christina Larson as the tribal duo, Diatribe ( Seattle ’s 1st ATS Troupe). Diatribe introduced ATS to Seattle live at the Lava Lounge, various parties and the Pyramid Restaurant in Honolulu . Later she joined Troupe Hipnotica for regular performances at the Baltic Room and various other locations. One of her final performances with Troupe Hipnotica was at the Folk Life Festival. She is a Licensed Massage Practitioner, Ayurvedic Body Worker, and Postpartum Doula. In addition, she is certified in General Skills by Carolena Nericcio of Fat Chance Belly Dance.
