NWBD: OTTOMAN TRADING COMPANY…HOLIDAY EVENTS and SALE

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

Hello …Holidays are almost here, and we hope you are well.
In recognition of the financially tough times, Ottoman Traders
have decided to run the after-Christmas sale NOW…as a way to
help you make your Holiday budgetstretch a bit further.
Palace textiles are drastically reduced, as areKilim handbags,
shoes, Turkish Carpets, ceramics, backgammon boards, and other
classic handicrafts; and our last few men’s leather coats are
now just $99. Tough bargaining in the Bazaar, and with Afghan
and Turkish suppliers, resulted in some great pricing on
other Holiday gift basics.

Country Village is sponsoring some classic Holiday events,
starting with our Open House, Sat November 22, from 10-6.  All
the shops will offer free snacks, demos, etc. Ottoman will
serve Turkish apple tea, and sample our olive oil which is
from Israel-Palestine….plus have door prizes.  December
6, at 7PM, we have our Annual Tree Lighting, and Santa will fly
in over the Duck Pond… (yes…he really flies)  Other events
are planned around the Village throughout the Holiday season.
See www.countryvillagbothell <http://www.countryvillagbothell/>
for more info. Our new play structure…a pirate ship…is now open
…and the ducks and chickens are always happy to see you,
especially if you bring grain.

Dance classes are ongoing through much of December…but we
have changed some times, and have some new teachers…Please
check out the schedule on our website
www.ottomantradingco.com <http://www.ottomantradingco.com/>
but more importantly, CALL BEFORE YOU COME OUT if you are a new,
or returning student.  Join now…or start with us again in
January to shake off those Holiday pounds.

Our teachers, and other dancers we have listed in the shop, are
happy to come to your venues to entertain, or teach a class at
your Holiday events…or you may book the Studio, and we will
clean up for you afterwards. Call for info and bookings.

DANCE SCHOOL HOLIDAY PARTY.Sunday December 7, 5-7 pm   Students
past and present, daughters, friends and family are invited.

Night) - a women’s party!

Friday, November 28, 2008, 8-10PM (short show at 8:30)

Dance Academy of Bellevue, 626 120th Ave. NE, Bellevue

Layali Banat (Arabic for Girls’ Night) is an evening of
hospitality, entertainment, and festivity reminiscent of a
Middle Eastern woman’s party. Bring a snack to share, a beverage
of your choice, and a pillow for sitting on the floor. The
evening will start with a short performance featuring Zulaika
and guests followed by open dancing to CDs of popular Arabic
tunes. Zulaika will provide a short dance lesson for women new
to the dance to join in the fun (last month she taught Debke to
get the dancing started). Having just returned from 2.5 weeks
in Morocco, Zulaika will also share a few of the treasures and
surprises she has brought back.

NWBD: Whirling Dervishes and Turkish Musicians in Seattle Dec 17th

Friday, November 21st, 2008

Experience a unique evening of Music, Poetry and Sacred Dance:

Wednesday, December 17, 2008, the Mevlevi Order of America will
present the Whirling Dervish Sema Ceremony in Seattle,
accompanied by Turkish musicians, honoring the great Sufi
Mystic Teacher and Poet, Mevlana Jelaluddin RUMI.

The Ceremony, created to offer a direct experience of
the transformative path exemplified by Rumi, dissolves the
separation between performer and observer.  With the flowing
white garments of the semazens (whirling prayer dancers) and
classical Sufi music, the Sema ceremony has stirred the hearts
of humanity with sacred beauty for centuries.

Beloved worldwide, the 13th century poet and mystic Rumi was the
original whirling dervish.  With his message of inclusion,
equality and love, Rumi’s great poetic masterworks have been
translated all over the world, and people everywhere claim him
as their own.  Today, Rumi is the most widely published poet
in North America.

Directed by Postneshin Jelaleddin Loras from Konya, Turkey,
founder of the Mevlevi Order of America, the special Shebi-arus
(Wedding Night) Sema Ceremony is presented as it has been for
over 700 years on the anniversary of Rumi’s final mystical Union.
In addition to Sema, special guest musicians from Turkey will
play a concert of classical and devotional Turkish music,
including master musicians Necati Celik, oud (fretless lute),
vocalist Timucin Cevikoglu, and Celalettin Bicer, ney (reed
flute), together with U.S.-based musicians Jemaluddin Henke,
ney, Nureddin Crammatte, kudum (small kettle drums), Andrea
Walls, violin, and Dennis Godfrey, gudulka (small fiddle).

Time: Wednesday, December 17, 2008,  7:30pm

Location: Great Hall, South Lake Union Park, 860 Terry Ave.
N., Seattle WA, 98109

Tickets are available in advance from
http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/43693 or by calling
1-800-838-3006.  $15 General, $25 first two rows.  Tickets
will also be available at the door: $18/$28 (cash only).

NWBD: Butoh for Belly Dancers/ TUESDAY NIGHT Nov 25

Butoh for Belly Dancers
A Workshop with Venessa Skantze

http://www.visionarydance.com/butoh_fall08.html
This workshop is at 7:30-9:30 on Tuesday NOV 25th
at VDP Studio
4128 Fremont Ave North
Seattle Wa 98109
206 632-2353
206 632-1906

NOTE
The regular scheduled Neighborhood Temple Preistess Class will
be included in this course.
http://www.visionarydance.com/butoh_fall08.html

More information Vanessa Skantze began the practice of butoh
dance in 2002 shortly after she co-founded the improvisational
music/dance ensemble Death Posture in New Orleans. Following
many years of writing and performing spoken word, solo and
collaborative performance works and physical theater; she dove
into the pure language of the body and the power of butoh
imagery to transcend personal and human limitations (while
continuing to use them as grist and fuel). Throughout Death
Posture’s New Orleans time and subsequently in Seattle–
where she arrived in 2004 with her dance partner Alex Ruhe–
Vanessa has constantly worked with experimental musicians in
performance.   Death Posture’s created works– both structured
and improvised — are intimate collaborations between bodies
and sound.   Vanessa does voice and percussion improvisation
with celadon as In the Deep Museum and frequently accompanies
butoh workshops and performances as a musician.  Vanessa
has been leading butoh workshops and classes since 2003.
She brings ten years of Ashtanga/Hatha yoga teaching
experience, lending her butoh classes a deep body
specificity and technique in which to ground butoh imagery.
Vanessa and Alex have trained and performed with Jinen Butoh
founder Atsushi Takenouchi since 2003.   They recently
traveled to Italy for four weeks of intensive workshop and
performances.  Jinen  (from an ancient word meaning ALL)
dances the manifestation of the universal nervous system,
the interwoven cycle of life and death, time and space.
Death Posture has also trained and performed with Diego
Pinon and Katsura Kan.  They create frequent group works,
and countless improvisations.  Death Posture’s major recent
works include I miss you, a piece for eight dancers, and
FLOOD, for six dancers. Both premiered at Good Shepherd
 Chapel performance space.
www.deathposture.org
http://www.youtube.com/profile_videos?user=celadonmusic&p=r

The class will nurture a deep exploration of the body as
instrument– one that receives and transmits energy. Butoh
is a dance of transformation at the cellular level.  In butoh
we are danced by the water, the wind and any other image/energy
we call upon.  To facilitate this openness we embark on an
intensive physical warmup incorporating elements of yoga and
Noguchi exercise as well as butoh training and releasing
energy through voice.   In developing this focused surrender to
the free play of the body’s energy channels with a rigorous
exploration of the body’s physical strength and suppleness (what
we call the edge in Ashtanga Yoga practice) we prepare our
instrument to experience and manifest with deep revelation and
intensity.  In the language of Vodou, a great rider (the lwa,
or spirit) demands a great horse.  Butoh imagery demands a
deeply aware mind/body commitment.  The rigor of the dance is in
the depth of focus and commitment rather than in virtuostic
ability. We will explore the natural movements of waves and
spirals, and work with elemental imagery from the natural
world as an introduction to butoh.   We will be danced by
light, heavy, cold, violent, and curious energies.  Our bodies
will metamorph as we embrace and absorb these, and from this
action the dance is born.  We seek to create a non-judgmental
sacred space within which dancers may open themselves to risk,
to explore the feelings rising within and dance those impulses
without needing to perform, to look good, or to show what they
know… rather butoh leaps off from a point of not-knowing,
where awkward, limited and even ugly movements can be all the
more compelling because it comes from real feeling.

NWBD: Helene Eriksen Newsletter November 2008

Monday, November 17th, 2008

We did it!  What an amazing time to be in the US and see the
air of excitement and hope and spirit of transformation that
this last election has brought.  I hope that we are all
stepping into a new era of justice, international understanding
and respect!

I had an amazing week in Kalamazoo.  Channon Mondoux went out
of her way to organize a full packed week…people came from
all over the midwest and they put me through my paces with
arts in the schools, a collaboration with a contemporary dance
ensemble, 3 workshops, private lessons, a community evening
highlighting the West Sahara, a solo evening performance and a
Gala show…whew!  The local newspaper put me on the front page
of the local section with a large article (click here to read it:
http://www.mlive.com/kzgazette/entertainment/index.ssf/2008/
10/global_movements_event_brings.html)
and on the front page of the newspaper a few days later.  We are
planning more events: an week-long retreat next summer and more
things in the year to come…perhaps a training project for
Michigan!  Keep posted.

Next week I leave for Europe.  I will be teaching the wonderful
floating dances from Azerbaijan in Worms, Germany and then
continue on to Slovenia, Croatia and Italy for workshops,
master classes and a performance in Ljubljana.  More
information below.

Next year I will be offering two trips back to back.  First
we will go to Armenia to study Armenian, Persian and Roma dance.
This trip is organized by Simona Jović
( http://www.simonajovic.com/ ) from France/Serbia and myself
and will be April 21-28th, 2009.  Immediately following will be
my annual trip to Turkey.  This year we will be in Istanbul for
the festival of Hırdellez on May 5/6…not to be missed…
reserve your space now!  More info on my website…and you can
request a pdf brochure about Armenia from me.

There are new video clips of my dancing on my website and you
can still find a link there to the Seattle ensemble’s recital
last June. To watch a brief clip about the festival where we
performed in Nepal click here
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FbPrTrwg2oo

Winter is coming (and the holiday season) and we have finally
uploaded photos of all my hats on my Etsy site.  You can see
what I do during my long flights, train rides and waiting-room
visits: one of a kind, art-to-wear crocheted hats in vibrant
colors and made from luxurious fibers.  I’ve also started making
wrist warmers. (I couldn’t survive the winter without them!)
There are lots of earrings too!  If you buy a hat, do please
send me a photo!  I would like to make a gallery of my hats on
the beautiful heads of their smiling owners!!!
http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=6039627

2009 is pretty full now…however I do have a few spaces for the
Spring in North America or the Fall in Europe and I still have
plenty of flexibility for 2010…so please contact me if you
would like to organize a workshop or performance!!!

To find out more about the individual dance styles listed below,
please visit the “Workshop Catalog” on my website.
