Message from Delilah
The inner work we each do tempers our instrument as dancers, as
artists. This dance doesn’t come from the out side. It’s not
especially engaging if the dancer just slaps movements on the
outside of her body.In learning sometimes it’s very hard,
because in the dance classroom we are following the teacher and
are inevitably in an external referral mind set for a while
(until we get a grip on the concepts).
We don’t own our dance until it’s internally referral.
All our movements come from the core and that results in grace,
 balance and a clear dance.

Dancers often request teachers to set a choreography for them
instead of making the dance their own. Do we not all have
something to say from our hearts? This is exactly when the
person needs to realize that to have something to say with your
dance, means you need to explore ones person-hood. Find out what
needs to be expressed. It will be wordless but full of meaning.
In fact the bodies language is way more meaningful than a spoken
or written word. A word is but an abbreviation for a volume of
meaning from with in us.
This is the over all reason dance is important to the human
experience.

“The Meaning of Egyptian” ~
Finally, learn what makes Egyptian style belly dance
definably Egyptian! Dispel common myths about the Egyptian style
of belly dance!  Little in art is black and white, but through
examples and stylization comparisons, Leila will help you
differentiate between some popular “cabaret” styles of this
ancient dance, such as, Lebanese, Turkish, American and more.
This is not a lecture class.  The class will work the Egyptian
stylization of dances (folkloric, classical and modern) while
comparing sounds and sights of other styles we often confuse
with Egyptian.

NWBD: Kathak Workshop Oct. 25-26, 2008 Seattle

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Hi friends,
Thanks to all of you who came down to the RVCC last friday.

This weekend we have chosen the repertoire for this year’s
training project and it’s going to be a lot of fun:

Tunisian
Baladi (we have a whole set of Tulle bi Telli…aka Assuit
dresses for the ensemble!)
Turkish Roman
Dabke
Azeri Canopy dance
Gilaki…rice harvest dance from N. Iran
Rajasthani Kabelia dance

There are still places available for the group…so if you
couldn’t make it to the intro weekend but would like to join
the project, please don’t hesitate to contact me!  I leave on
tour on Nov. 25th…so if you would like to call, please do
so soon. 843/599-1089 We also LOVE our new studio in Ballard
…what a lovely place to be!

The project weekends are:
October 18-19, 2008
November 8-9, 2008
December 13-14, 2008
January 10-11, 2009
February 21-22, 2009
March 14-15, 2009
April 4-5, 2009
May 16-17, 2009
May 30-31, 2009
Final recitals June 5 & 6, 2009 at the Rainier Valley Cultural
Center (and possibly a performance at Northwest Folklife, as
well as the option for an international tour to a folklore
festival)

The project itself will then be a series of 9 intensive weekends
of 12 hours each. We would have a theme and a repertoire of 7
dances…decided upon in the introductory weekend, after which
one must decide to participate or not and commit by contract.
We will learn the techniques of each of the dance styles
decided upon, do dance training and yoga, learn about the
cultural and historical backgrounds for the different dance
styles, learn about choreography, staging, stage make-up and
costumes. We learn 7 different group choreographies…each
student will be in 4 choreographies, but is expected to be able
to stand in for the other 3 if necessary.  We will also make
decisions about costuming at the introductory workshop…which
will mostly come from my collection. At the end of the project
we do a recital…I do solos in between the group choreographies
so that we have a smooth running, full evening performance.
There is a certificate of participation for all who complete
the program. If you would like to chat about anything you are
welcome to call! 843/599-1089

Best regards!
